The New-Look LGPS 2008 presentation
You may be aware that the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is under review. Several changes have been made and there are further changes proposed. Alongside these changes, discussions are taking place between the Government, unions and employers on a new look LGPS for 2008.
This new section of the Fund's website has been set up to provide information about the new LGPS that will take effect from 1 April 2008.

On 4 March 2008, Communities and Local Government (CLG) have released a document entitled 'Sustaining the Local Government Pension Scheme in England and Wales'. This document discusses the proposed cost sharing mechanism which will be introduced into the LGPS in future.

The Local Government Pension Scheme Regulations 2007 SI 2008 No 238 and No 239 were laid on 14 February 2008 and will come into force by 1 April 2008. These Regulations amend the Local Government Pension Scheme Regulations 1997.

Local Government Pension Scheme Regulations
On 22 June 2007 the CLG issued a letter which started a limited period of statutory consultation on the following two separate sets of proposals:
- Changes believed necessary to the Local Government Pension Scheme (Benefits, Membership and Contributions) Regulations 2007 - These Regulations relate to the benefit structure of the new Scheme with effect from 1 April 2008.
- Draft Local Government Pension Scheme (Transitional Provisions) These Regulations set out the provisions relating to members of the LGPS Regulations 1997, which is to be replaced by the new scheme with effect from 1 April 2008.
Comments on both the proposals to amend the Benefits Regulations and the draft SI for the Transistional provisions should be returned to the CLG no later than 3 August 2007.

Local Government Pension Scheme Regulations
On 15 June 2007 the Minister for Local Government, Phil Woolas, made a written statement about the Local Government Pension Scheme.
This statement announced a forthcoming statutory consultation exercise on proposals to extend the current levels of protections in the Scheme for older members, which took effect from 1 October 2006, to provide full, rather than tapered protection to 2020.

Draft Regulations Update - January 2007
On 23 November 2006, Phil Woolas MP, the Minister for Local Government announced that it was the intention of the Department of Communication and Local Government (DCLG) to offer for consultation two seperate statutory instruments for a new look Local Government Pension Scheme with effect from 1 April 2008.
On the 2 January 2007, the following draft documents were circulated as the start of the statutory consultation exercise.
The closing date for comments is 28 February 2007.

This consultation put forward options for the future of the Local Government Pension Scheme to build consensus for a new-look Scheme from April 2008. The consultation period ran between 30 June and 29 September 2006.
