Does this form cover cohabiting partner pensions for members?
The death grant nomination form is for your death grant payment only. If you wish to nominate your partner to receive a pension in the event of your death, you must complete the Nomination of Cohabiting Partner[pdf - 558kb]form.
A cohabiting partner is someone you are living with as if you are married or in a civil partnership.
If you are a Councillor member, the Scheme rules do not allow you to nominate your cohabiting partner to receive a pension.
A survivor pension for a widow, widower or civil partner is automatic in the scheme.
How much will the death grant be?
The amount of the death grant can vary depending what type of member you are. For instance if you are paying into the Scheme the death grant will be three years' pensionable pay (if you work part time it will be three years part time pay). For contributing Councillor members it will be two times career average pay. However for deferred or retired members the rules regarding death grants are more complex. Please contact us for further information.
Can I say who I want to receive it?
Yes, you can tell us who you would like to receive any death grant by completing a nomination form. You can nominate one or more person. However, if you wish to nominate someone under 18 years old, you should obtain independent legal advice. The form will cover all death grants that may be due from us, including any death grants from in-house AVCs.
We can choose to make payment to another person if your form appears to be out of date. It is your responsibility to keep your nomination up to date.
Why make a nomination?
By making a nomination any payment(s) can be made quickly without usually waiting for your estate to be settled. If a nomination is not made then payment can take time and your relatives and other persons may be asked to provide information at a time when they are distressed.
