Transferring Previous Pension Rights
Can I transfer my previous pension rights into the LGPS?
In most, but not all cases, yes - but there are time limits associated with this and a transfer of your previous benefits can only proceed when;
- the value of your previous pension rights has been obtained by yourself using the appropriate forms and
- you have been notified by us of the membership that the transfer will buy in the LGPS and
- you have made a written election that you want the transfer to go ahead
How do I arrange this and what are the time limits associated with transferring?
- If you have joined the Fund within the last 12 months and wish to consider transferring previous pension rights from outside of the LGPS you should complete form A and forward it with form B to your previous pension provider.

- If you have joined the Fund within the last 12 months and wish to consider transferring previous pension rights from another LGPS Fund in England or Wales you should complete form C and send it to your former Fund.
- If you have joined the LGPS within the last 12 months and wish to consider transferring previous pension rights from another LGPS Fund in Scotland or Northern Ireland you should complete form B and send it to your former Fund.
What if it is more than 12 months since I joined the Fund?
If you joined the Fund more than 12 months ago you will also need your employer's permission before any transfer can proceed. You must complete form D to seek this. Your employer has absolute discretion to allow the transfer to proceed (providing you have not already left this employment). Your employer must be fair and consistent in applying their policy.
Please note that you cannot transfer a pension credit into the LGPS.
